Like many other urban rivers, Akerselva has been impacted by urban development and activities since the 19th century. Much has been done during the last 25 years to improve water quality and reduce pollution. Through Oslo municipality's program, “Byøkologisk program 2011-2026”, work was carried out to reopen culverted streams and to create blue/green corridors throughout the city. This was one of the drivers for restoration work in Akerselva and other rivers in Oslo. Several restoration projects have already been carried out in Akerselva in recent years and more are planned in the future.
