|Project summary=Restoration of the River Chelmer upstream of Chelmsford City Centre by re-profiling the banks to increase in-channel morphological diversity, create additional marginal aquatic habitats, improve floodplain connectivity and create additional backwater habitats.&lt;br /&gt;
The River Chelmer has historically been heavily modified to improve flood protection and land drainage. This has led to a uniform wide, straight, deep channel upstream of Chelmsford City Centre. This in tern has resulted in reduced plant diversity, and there has recently been deterioration in fish status.&lt;br /&gt;
|Monitoring surveys and results=Increasing the diversity of the channel provide different habitats to support a wider diversity of plants and animals. Fish bays provide shallow, slower flowing, warmer water preferred by small fish and fry.&lt;br /&gt;
Blackwater habitats increase habitat diversity, whilst providing a refuge for fish and invertebrates from high flows. &lt;br /&gt;
The banks and channel of the main river were re-profiled at 9 locations. The river bank was lowered to re-connect the river to its natural floodplain, improving marginal and riparian wetland habitats. Improving connectivity between the river and floodplain allows sediment to settle out on the floodplain, and fish and invertebrates to escape from the highest flows in flood events By storing water on the floodplain sooner, downstream flood risk can also be reduced. The bank material was pushed into the channel, creating earth berms. These narrow the channel during low flows, increasing water velocity. This helps other river processes such as sediment transfer, erosion and depositing and oxygenation of the water, which creates habitats and improves water quality. The berms also create diversity of marginal and aquatic habitats, which was previously very uniform. In addition, shallow bays were created and a backwater improved to provide additional habitat for fish and fry. &lt;br /&gt;
|Lessons learn=Early communication with permitting bodies and involvement of local communities is essential to deliver successful projects in a short timescale.&lt;br /&gt;

|Project summary=Restoration of a former mill channel to improve backwater habitat for fish, plants and invertebrates. Restored mill channel will also act to improve the quality of surface water run-off from adjacent urban area. &lt;br /&gt;
The River Can is at a Poor Ecological Status and is not meeting WFD objectives for Fish, invertebrates and Macrophytes. Restoring and reconnecting the historic mill channel into the river will create addition habitat. Surface water from the adjacent urban area also discharges into the mill channel. Leaky dams installed in the mill channel will slow the surface water down, allowing any sediment to settle out and filtering any pollution, thus improving water quality. The mouth of the channel has been widened and de-silted. Better connecting the back channel habitat and refuge from both high flows and predators for fish. Warm shallow areas have also been created. which are ideal habitat for fish fry.&lt;br /&gt;
|Monitoring surveys and results=By Intercepting run-off and trapping sediment, this scheme will help achieve better water quality preventing the loss of soil, chemicals, nutrients, and faecal organisms. A further benefit is their ability to temporarily capture water and slow down flow. his can reduce localised flooding. Improved back channel habitat that is better connected to the main river will benefit fish invertebrates and plants both in the riparian zone and amin river.&lt;br /&gt;
|Lessons learn=Local authorities own significant amounts of land along all of our main rivers. Working in partnership with them can improve their parkland and nature reserves for amenity, recreation and conservation, benefitting local communities wildlife and reducing flood risk.&lt;br /&gt;

Nobles Green Ditch has historically ben heavily modified to improve flood protection and land drainage. It is failing to meet its WFD objectives for invertebrates. The mitigation measures assessment for the river revealed that measures were needed to improve in-channel morphological diversity. This project aims to address these issues.&lt;br /&gt;
|Monitoring surveys and results=Research undertaken by the wildlife trusts concluded that 147 species of river invertebrates are closely associated with woody debris. These features directly provide habitat for such species. Furthermore, woody debris flow deflectors improve river morphology, creating differential areas of fast and slow flowing water. Energetic, faster flowing water improves sediment transfer, helping to keep gravels clean. It is also important for the formation of features such as riffles and pools as well as meanders. Slower flowing water provides a refuge for fish and invertebrates from high flows, and allows silt to settle out, eventually forming berms which will improve diversity of flow and plant communities.&lt;br /&gt;

Riparian shade mapping from the Keeping Rivers Cool project and walk over surveys showed that the rive would benefit from increased shade at a number of locations. Working with landowners, Essex &amp;amp; Suffolk River Trust identified a number of sites where tree planting could be undertaken, and planted trees at one suitable site.&lt;br /&gt;

In the future the tree roots and woody debris from fallen branches and tree trunks will provide important in-channel habitat and flow diversity, providing refuge for fish and invertebrates from both predators and high flows. Trees also help stabilise the banks, reducing erosion as well as improving infiltration and intercepting pollution and sediment. Reduced sediment transfer prevents the smothering of important gravel habitat, and can reduce pesticide and nutrient run off. Tree planting therefore not only provides important habitat but improves water quality and can reduce the need for expensive river maintenance.&lt;br /&gt;
|Lessons learn=Close liaison with permitting and enforcement colleagues is essential to establish suitable restoration sites, and ensure that flood risk is not increased.&lt;br /&gt;

|Project summary=Installation of low tech, low cost structures designed to capture, slow and improve the quality of run-off from fields and rural roads:&lt;br /&gt;
Rural sustainable drainage systems(SuDs) slow down or prevent the transport of pollutants to watercourse by breaking the delivery pathway between the pollutant source and the receptor. This project was funded by DEFRA&#039;s Catchment Partnership Action Fund, supported by the environment programme team. There are 42 water bodies in the broadland rivers catchment that are not achieving good ecological due to diffuse pollution.&lt;br /&gt;
|Monitoring surveys and results=By intercepting run off and trapping sediment, all these schemes will help achieve better water quality by preventing the loss of soil, chemicals, nutrients, and faecal organisms. A further benefit is their ability to temporarily capture water and slow down flow. This can reduce localised flooding.&lt;br /&gt;
66 Landowners were engaged through a workshop and series of presentations to identify suitable sites, raising the profile of the effectiveness of rural SuDs schemes. 6 schemes were then taken forward and simple measures installed to reduce run-off. Some of the schemes were completed under a regulatory position statement related to the disposal of waste sediment from distilling. This ensured that regulation was proportionate to the risk, reflecting the small scale of the scheme and the overall environmental benefit.&lt;br /&gt;
|Lessons learn=With close liaison with permitting and enforcement colleagues it is essential to apply the relevant legislation appropriately.&lt;br /&gt;
This is used as a pilot scheme for other projects which are linked with WWF/Waterlife/Coca Cola over the next 3 years. &lt;br /&gt;

The Reepham Stream is a tributary of the River Wensum located between Reepham and Cawston in Norfolk. Historic management and land drainage has led to a river channel that is deep in relation to surrounding ground, and contains little variation in habitat. Working with the IDB and NRT, a scheme was designed that would not increase flood risk but would enhance the habitat in stream to help improve its ecological status. This work will compliment the River Wensum Restoration Strategy.&lt;br /&gt;
|Monitoring surveys and results=With utilisation of plant materials and resources already on site, minimising mobilisation costs for river restoration; to improve habitat diversity in a heavily modified waterbody; to give greater flow diversity helping to address low dissolved oxygen issues.&lt;br /&gt;

|Project summary=Hoveton Great Broad is situated between the villages of Hoveton and Horning, immediately adjacent to the River Bure in the heart of the Broads. It is designated under the Habitats and Birds Directives and the RAMSCAR Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The lake has poor plant growth and excessive sediment deposits. This acts as a source of phosphorus which causes algal growth and poor ecology. The quality of the river water has improved over recent years and is now able to support the lake restoration. None of the 21 lakes in the Broadland catchment meet good WFD status. This project will help inform future lake measures in this internationally important wetland.&lt;br /&gt;
|Monitoring surveys and results=Technically robust information will be available to inform the Hoveton Wetlands Restoration Project, increased understanding of the wider implications of the project on Broad fisheries status as a whole. Benefits include angler participation and support for the restoration projects.&lt;br /&gt;
The objectives are to significantly improve the condition of the lake by creating clear water conditions in which a variety of plants and animals thrive. NE are leading on an ambitious £4.5m project funded by LIFE+ and Heritage Lottery Fund to undertake sediment removal and biomanipulation of the fish populations with the aim of resorting the lake to good status including for fish. Our aim is to support our partners in this project, add to our understanding of Broadland fisheries, and shallow lake restoration measures.&lt;br /&gt;

|Project summary=Hoveton Great Broad is situated between the villages of Hoveton and Horning, immediately adjacent to the River Bure in the heart of the Broads. It is designated under the Habitats and Birds Directives and the RAMSCAR Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The lake has poor plant growth and excessive sediment deposits. This acts as a source of phosphorus which causes algal growth and poor ecology. The quality of the river water has improved over recent years and is now able to support the lake restoration. None of the 21 lakes in the Broadland catchment meet good WFD status. This project will help inform future lake measures in this internationally important wetland.&lt;br /&gt;
|Monitoring surveys and results=Technically robust information available to inform the Hoveton Wetlands Restoration Project, increased understanding of the wider implications of the project on Broad fisheries status as a whole. Benefits include angler participation and support for the restoration projects.&lt;br /&gt;
