|Picture description=Fencing and tree planting along the River Lyvennet, a tributary of the River Eden in Cumbria
|Project summary=This project will improve the habitat and water quality of rivers within the Eden catchment in Cumbria. The River Eden is of international importance for its wildlife and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). It supports many significant species including white-clawed crayfish, salmon, trout, eel, bullhead, lamprey, otter, water vole, invertebrates of river shingle and water crowfoot. The Eden is the best remaining stronghold of the endangered white-clawed crayfish, which is threatened and declining across the UK and Western Europe.
The Eden catchment comprises 98 water bodies. Under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) classification 59% of these fail to achieve Good Ecological Status and none of them are in “high” condition.
Problems within the Eden are due to agriculture, sewage, septic tanks, urbanisation, invasive species and poor quality habitats along and within rivers.
The project will restore more natural features in and around rivers and reduce the impact of diffuse pollution arising from agriculture. It aims to protect and expand populations of white-clawed crayfish as well as those of other valued river species. This will be achieved by installing riverside fencing (20 km), planting riverside trees (6,000), producing 20 farm assessments in areas of crayfish populations, carrying out improvement work on 20 farms to reduce diffuse pollution and carrying out in-stream habitat improvements at 5 locations.
|Monitoring surveys and results=Annual juvenile salmonid electro-fishing surveys - see Eden Rivers Trust website for published reports.
Annual white-clawed crayfish manual hand search surveys - see Eden Rivers Trust website for published reports.
Fixed point photography monitoring of river habitat improvement projects (on-going - see examples under Monitoring below).
Repeated individual farm assessments with advice on reducing diffuse pollution, including farm infra-structure improvements where applicable (confidential to the land owner/tenant). A proportion will be reassessed at the end of the project.
It aims to return rivers in the Eden catchment to a more natural state for the benefit of wildlife and people. It was developed as a remedy for the unfavourable condition of large parts of the River Eden and Tributaries Site of Special Scientific Interest.
A straightened section of the River Leith at Thrimby Hall near Penrith was returned to its original meandering course with about 280 m of straightened channel now being 0ver 350 m long. On the River Lyvennet and Howe Beck at Barnskew and Meaburn Hall, Maulds Meaburn the rivers were restored to their original winding channels with approximately 1500 m of straightened river now meandering through nearly 1900 m. |Project summary=Removing Carleton Hall weir in the River Eamont, Eamont Bridge, Penrith, Cumbria

This project is part of the Cumbria River Restoration Strategy (RRS), a partnership project involving the Environment Agency, Natural England and the three Cumbrian Rivers Trusts - Eden Rivers Trust, West Cumbria Rivers Trust and South Cumbria Rivers Trust. The Cumbria RRS aims to create a healthier and more sustainable environment for both people and wildlife.

A feasibility study of the removal of this weir was undertaken by JBA Consulting in 2016 to identify the most appropriate option. All the necessary permissions and consents were then obtained and extensive consultation was undertaken. Local contractors were employed to undertake the ground works in August 2016.

For more details and to see a film of the removal please see the project page on our website http://www.edenriverstrust.org.uk/removing-weirs-eden
|Monitoring surveys and results=Pre-removal surveys have been undertaken of the river for habitat, fish & native crayfish and post-removal survey work will be undertaken for comparison.
Fixed point photographs will be used to monitor the visible physical effects on the river of removing the weir.
|Lessons learn=The preparatory work for these weir removals involved:

-	“Weir removal/modification Feasibility Appraisal” by JBA Consulting, covering hydrology, ecology, structure, services, contamination, cultural heritage and concept design.
-	Planning Permission application (16/0459).
-	Impoundment Licence application (NW/076/0006/005).
-	Environmental Permit application (EPR/RB3396JX).
-	Consultation and formal agreement with weir owners.
-	Consultation with local community groups, interest groups and Councillors.
-	Consultation with Local Authorities and other relevant statury agencies.
-	Appropriate survey and mitigation for otters, bats, trees, crayfish, fish and invasive species.

|Monitoring surveys and results=Fixed point photographs will be used to monitor the visible physical effects on the river of removing the weir.
Pre-removal surveys have been undertaken of the river for habitat, fish & native crayfish and post-removal survey work will be undertaken for comparison.
|Lessons learn=The preparatory work for these weir removals involved:

-	“Weir removal/modification Feasibility Appraisal” by JBA Consulting, covering hydrology, ecology, structure, services, contamination, cultural heritage and concept design.
-	Planning Permission application (16/0459).
-	Impoundment Licence application (NW/076/0006/005).
-	Environmental Permit application (EPR/RB3396JX).
-	Consultation and formal agreement with weir owners.
-	Consultation with local community groups, interest groups and Councillors.
-	Consultation with Local Authorities and other relevant statury agencies.
-	Appropriate survey and mitigation for otters, bats, trees, crayfish, fish and invasive species.
-	Design & tender of ground works.
-	Health & Safety requirements.
-	Construction Design & Management Regulations.
-	Pollution control measures.
-	Archaeological Watching Brief (Carleton Hall only, before and during works).
-	Monitoring.
-	Publicity.
