Technical Report on vulnerability to climate change and adaptation to water scarcity in the European Alps. Regional Case Studies:

This report, prepared by the EEA and its European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change (ETC/ACC) in cooperation with the Alpine Convention, analyses the vulnerability of the Alpine Region with regard to the impacts of climate change, focussing on water issues. It further assesses possible needs, constraints and opportunities for adaptation to the adverse impacts in order to support regional and local administrations in making informed decisions to develop and implement adaptation strategies. This study complements earlier studies in expanding the knowledge base.

Description:

 The report is structured around three main parts:

- Part I ‘Setting the Scene’ reviews climate change impacts and adaptation needs in the Alps, its role as water towers of Europe and the sectoral perspective;
- Part II ‘Case Studies’ illustrates key issues of water resource problems and adaptation activities through six regional examples, focusing on drivers of adaptation measures, multi-level governance, example of good practices and knowledge barriers.
- Part III ‘Lessons learnt’ sketches key messages from the regional case studies that are of prime importance for informing policy-making at European scale.
